On Sunday, February 17, 2019 in Norg, a Canicross, Bikejöring and Step race was organised by the beautiful area of the Langeloërduinen. By Sjirk I was approached to be present as a photographer, after seeing me during the workshop in Zorgvlied.
To promote the competition, the first organised by Sjirk, he wanted pictures. An interview with a local news magazine was already scheduled with him, and a few appropriate photos would complete it. An appointment was made in this way; at the location where the canicross, bikejöring and scootering will take place.
Two birds with one stone. I get a tour of part of the course and get a great impression of what it's going to look like during the race. Sjirk gets pictures for the (online) news magazines and social media with a rider and a cyclist, both with the same dog in action as a model.
Exploring for the Canicross Norg 2019
The course is challenging. In the beginning there are immediately three hills to climb. On the third I wait for the participants during the competition. Sjirk had this place in mind for me and that's a great choice. Behind me, the trail is continued, so if I have the chance, I can even photograph them from that angle.
Two locations are chosen for the promotional photos of the Canicross Norg 2019. At home I will make a choice and send digitally. The route is partly over an old crossway, hence the hills. Along the way, we also encounter obstacles. These are used for the horse cross that is always held later in the year. This clearly has more to offer the environment. It's going to be a great game.
A report in word and image
On Saturday I pack my photo bag and check the cameras, set some values, empty one of the memory cards and make sure the batteries are full. It's my first event this year, so I need to put some stuff back together and organize. In addition, it is the big baptism of fire for my new camera. The Canon 80D is coming.
The new camera at work
I have taken these with me for the past few weeks during walks to get used to it and become familiar with it. The menu is more extensive, buttons have been placed differently, new settings had to be tested, the technique has not stood still in 6 years time. After taking about 100,000 photos with the Canon 7D, there is a feeling that the 80D will succeed. And I have to say, he didn't violate that trust. I've deleted very few photos.
Which, in turn, had the disadvantage that more than 1,200 photos remained. And that these files are much larger than the previous camera. The difference? With the 7D I edited the photos and then saved them for the online album. This process was started in the evening and in the morning it was finished. Before I went to work, I was able to select the files and start uploading. Once i got home, this was done and I announced it on Facebook. So I also went for the pictures taken during this Canicross Norg 2019 of the 80D started working. But the next morning the counter was only 50%. Even when I got home from work, he still had 10% to go. So I really need to take that into account.
Canicross Norg 2019 day
In the morning I report to the organization. The course has been inspected, the coffee pot is ready and the forms are laid out on the table. They're ready, now that I. In time I drive to the parking lot on the edge of the forest and walk the last stretch towards my place. I don't have to use the trolley as a chair this time, on the hill there is a picnic table of which I use a seat for displaying my belongings.
The last settings are done. When a few participants come to explore the trail, I gratefully make use of their presence. The first pictures are taken and after a few test shots I'm all set. If the first aid station is behind me, it can't take long.
On the scooter, bike or running with a rope attached to the dog's harness, they pass by piece by. The participants do not start as a group, but start with a time difference of 1 minute in a row. Very nice for me, because that's the only way most participants are in the picture.
A day full of speed
The surface is quite hard, so despite the roots and the sand path, the steppers fly by. It's a competition and blood fanatic sits by most, with an even more fanatical dog literally pulling them through the hills. The rope that connects them is tight. Up hill and up hill. Where I thought beforehand that they would come up the third hill with difficulty, they roll smoothly past me at full speed. The cyclists are going even harder.
Some runners I see looking for their balance when they go downhill again. The dog runs on and the participant runs down, has to keep an eye on where the dog is going and has to avoid the roots in the meantime. I'll give you to do, good work.
Result of the day, photos
I think all the participants have been allowed to walk in a beautiful area and that through the hills has been a real cross. As a photographer I also had a great time and took many pictures. I will choose a few photos and post online (website, Facebook, Instagram) as a short impression of the day. Who knows until next time!
