The national riding club and pony club Huneruiters has been organising an autumn cross ride in the autumn for several years. Last year this event coincided with another, but this year I'm back in the game. This 16 November can be started as a solo rider, in team or as a group.
This ride is essentially a nice outdoor ride of 17 km, plotted with signs. The first participants start at 10:30 on the Autumn Cross ride Huneruiters. For the enthusiasts, a split has been made on the route towards a cross-circle consisting of 15 obstacles of about 60 cm height. Tensionand non-crossers can follow the regular route.
A report in word and image
On a grey day I drive from Assen to Havelte. It has been agreed that I will report to the organization and look for an obstacle from there. In consultation with Peter, the other photographer that day, we set out. From the break point, the rest has to be walked. Peter stands at an obstacle with roots and I walk on to a location where three obstacles are together.
Number 11 is a blue barrel that is about to be jumped. Under trees, so in combination with the little light of the day this will be the trickiest. Number 12 is a row of car tyres between two Christmas trees. On the side it ends a bit, it's open, I like this one best. Number 13 is an indoor wooden bench with high corn stems on both sides. The path here is a bit narrower, but a good second place for taking pictures. This is going to be a fun day.
In the beginning, after the obstacle has been taken, I walk to one of the other two obstacles. Nice for the variety in photos and it keeps me moving. It's not hot, the sun won't show itself for the rest of the day. Because of the high ISO I take the pictures with my fullframe. This one's a little slower, so good timing is important. Because I'm so close to the obstacles, I choose the wide-angle lens. Let the Autumn Cross ride Huneruiters 2019 start.
Follow-up Autumn Cross Ride Huneruiters 2019
The participants come with good distances along my. Not everyone will choose to drive this piece. I won't see the drivers take the hurdle anyway. That means that while waiting I can already view the photos taken and delete some instantly. In addition, I stomp the sand in front of and behind the obstacle again. I don't know if it matters for the jump and/or landing, but it kills time.
Variety in the jumps
Where one horse reluctantly runs towards the obstacle, others fly over the three obstacles at a pace. Only a few times it occurs that a horse swerves just before the obstacle or makes an emergency stop. Everyone stays happy, despite the unexpected movement. For example, obstacle 13 is scary enough for a few participants to drive around this without attempt with an arc. Sometimes the presence of me as a photographer is enough conviction to make the jump at number 12, hoping to come home with a picture.
When two ladies arrive on those sturdy draught horses, after taking the first two obstacles they have an idea: they go at the same time. Simultaneously? Side by side!? For a moment they take a good look at the width of the obstacle and decide to do it. That's going to fit! Where I still have my doubts, the doubts among the ladies have been turned into action. On the first run, they don't get to the obstacle side by side. A second attempt is needed, but then I see them flying neatly side by side over the obstacle.
Both ladies are very curious about the picture of the just made jump. On the screen I show the result. Thanks to the time between each group, there is room to do so. Excited about the result shown, they continue their way. I take a picture of the screen and post it online. I'm also excited about the photo. It won't be surpassed today.
If one of the participants announces that not many groups will follow behind her, that will be a good thing. It's slowly getting darker. After taking the last pictures, Peter and us report back to the organization. After a mutual thank you, our work is neither done. They're already busy cleaning up. When I get home, I'll start editing all the photos. Plus the movie.
Film Autumn Cross ride Huneruiters 2019
While shooting, I mounted the smartphone on top of the camera and made short shots of a number of participants. These recordings are combined into this short film as an impression of the event:
Result of the day, photos
It was a very spectacular day for me as a photographer to be able to capture everything. I left almost 300 photos of it at the event. I will choose a few photos and post online (website, Facebook, Instagram) as a short impression of the day. I've seen a lot of enthusiastic faces. Thanks for the many thumbs etc.
The photos of the Autumn Cross Ride 2019 can be viewed below. The further financial settlement runs through Oypo, so that possible combination with other events / photographers can be combined. Read my short explanation about Oypo and the possibilities for ordering a print, digital file, garment or other gift with the photo taken. Enjoy this day, have fun and watch until next time.
